The annual Alternative Reading Week Days of Service is an intensive project-based community service event for student leaders to explore the concepts of learning through service, leadership for social change, and community development.

This student-led co-curricular service-learning program gives you the chance to learn more about the local region and various social issues, and to do something meaningful by contributing to community-defined projects during your reading week break.

The Alternative Reading Week Program consists of:
  • Pre-service training and orientation
  • Community service projects
  • Reflection and action planning

Join the Alternative Reading Week Planning Team to represent your student organization to play an important role in this exciting community service project or register as a participant! Registration is now open until placements are full or January 27th, 2012.

Student Testimonials

After participating in the ARW, I feel that I have learned the art of understanding, patience, and acceptance. Toronto is a diverse city, hosting a variety of ethnicities, religions and cultures. Working in the Mt. Dennis community helped me realize that an understanding of these diversities go hand in hand with what it means to be a Torontonian.

The value of this volunteer initiative was meaningful and significant, to say the least.   There was much to contribute, and also much to learn. There was a lot opportunity to interact with community members throughout the initiative as well as fellow colleagues, which made the experience exceptionally high quality.

It was way over my expectation and my expectation was very high. After total 14 hours of this event, I didn't feel any tiredness at all. I enjoyed every minute of it!!

Days of Service was a great way to spend Reading Week. Volunteering with the food bank brought to light the poverty and hunger issue that I didn't even know was so prevalent in Toronto. Not only was the day meaningful, I also got to meet new people and have fun along the way. Count me in for next year!
